Every September the same thing happens: you buy a pile of stationery, cram it into a case, and discover three weeks in that you're missing the one thing you actually need while carrying five you don't. This checklist fixes that. It's built around what genuinely earns its place in a school or university pencil case — organised by priority so you can pack smart, not heavy.

The essentials (these go in every case)

• Two black or blue pens. Always carry a backup — running out mid-exam is a classic disaster.
• One pencil (or a mechanical pencil and spare leads). Non-negotiable for maths, diagrams and rough work.
• An eraser that actually erases — a fresh one, not the grey stub from last year.
• A sharpener with a shavings catcher, so you're not making a mess in your bag.
• One highlighter for marking up notes. A single colour you use beats five you don't.
• A short ruler (15cm) — long enough for most tasks, short enough to fit the case.

Subject-specific add-ons

Maths & sciences

• A compass and protractor (store the compass point-protected).
• A scientific calculator — check your school's approved models.
• A mechanical pencil for precise diagrams.

Art & design

• A small set of coloured pencils or fineliners.
• A kneaded eraser for shading.
• A glue stick and small scissors if your course needs them.

The "nice to have" drawer

These don't need to travel daily, but keep them in a desk drawer for when they're useful: correction tape, a stapler, spare leads and erasers, paper clips, and a USB stick. Restock your case from this drawer rather than carrying everything everywhere.

Choosing the case itself

For a full school load, look for a case with around 25–30 item capacity, a sturdy full-length zip, and a wipe-clean material that survives being crushed in a backpack.
